Credit: The course Environmental Medicine/Border Health is an approved elective for first-year and fourth-year medical students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Fourth-year students enroll in course number: FAPR 7008, and earn up to 4 credits (one per week). First-year medical students enroll in course number ELEC 3009. For first-year medical students enrolled at the Health Science Center, there is no credit toward completion of requirements for graduation, and no grade will be recorded. However, upon completion of the elective to the course director's satisfaction, the Office of Student Services will be notified so that a notation may appear on the student's transcript that this elective was completed.

Visiting students need to confirm whether their school will offer credit. Our staff will be happy to supply information as to topics and schedule.

Expenses: There is no tuition. There is a $25 processing fee for fourth-year medical students from outside the Health Science Center. Housing and on-site transportation are provided free. Students are responsible for their own meals, telephone, and transportation to and from Laredo.

Deadlines: The course is offered six to eight times a year. Instruction generally begins on the first Monday of the month and lasts four weeks. Contact us for the dates of the elective you are considering. We may be able to arrange a special course if there are at least three interested participants.
